A study by researchers from Penn State University and Boston College determined that recycling increases with consumer engagement. Consumers want more information about what and how to responsibly recycle but also which new products can be created by the recycled material. They want to make choices that don’t end up in a landfill.

There are many claims of recyclability but many of the newest innovations in sustainability involve multi-step instructions and limited facilities. With increased use of shelf-stable and nonperishable goods, consumer education is more important than ever.

The story of steel can recycling hasn’t changed for decades and is very simple for the consumer. In fact, it is one of the best curbside recycling candidates and even if discarded, can be separated from other waste by magnet. The process of recycling steel burns off labels, inks, coatings and contaminants. This eliminates additional handling by the consumer and the facility. Recycled steel can be used to make any steel product, including the original container, without loss of quality!

Cans minimize food waste by preventing spoilage and contamination. They are also easy to reuse and/or repurpose. Add to that, the collectibility of decorative tins for display in homes and businesses.
